As part of our commitment to corporate social responsibility, we were delighted to host 18 students from St. George’s College Entrepreneurship Society Club for an immersive tour of our business operations and projects. This day offered a unique opportunity for these aspiring entrepreneurs to explore the dynamic world of architecture and property development.

Behind the Scenes at TDW Offices

The tour began at our Newlands offices, where we provided a comprehensive overview of our diverse departments. Students engaged directly with our staff, gaining firsthand insights into their daily responsibilities and asking thoughtful questions. This interaction offered a valuable glimpse into the inner workings of a successful business.

From Blueprint to Reality: Site Tours

The students then experienced the practical side of our work with visits of 2 of our sites:

  • Knightsbridge One (Newlands): At this active construction site, students witnessed the early stages of development. We demonstrated the collaborative effort required, showcasing how architects, engineers, site workers, and contractors transform designs into reality. Our team shared expertise on crucial aspects, including health and safety protocols (from our SHEQ Officer), project planning, site management, and sustainable eco-friendly strategies (from our Project Manager). This immersive experience provided a tangible understanding of the construction process, from blueprint to foundation.
  • Glenara One (Highlands): Our tour concluded at Glenara One, a completed luxury development featuring 12 townhouses. This site showcased the culmination of meticulous planning and construction efforts, offering students a tangible understanding of the development lifecycle. Witnessing the finished product highlighted the importance of effective project management and the dedication of the TDW team.

The Glenara One project served as a testament to our commitment to delivering exceptional results, and we were thrilled to share this experience with the students.

Learning from Industry Leaders

During the tour, Chiedza Mandivheyi, a participant in our ‘Girls Can’ initiative and current intern, shared her inspiring journey. She spoke candidly about how her hands-on experience at TDW has deepened her industry knowledge and strengthened her university applications for architecture programs globally. Her testimony emphasized the invaluable role of mentorship and practical experience in shaping future careers.

Munya Jokonya, TDW Technical Director and a St. George’s College alumnus (Class of 2008), delivered an enlightening talk, sharing his personal journey in architecture. He offered invaluable insights into the challenges, rewards, and continuous learning inherent in the field. He stressed the importance of acquiring relevant education and skills, providing a relatable and compelling perspective.

Engaging the Next Generation

Throughout the day, the students demonstrated exceptional engagement, asking insightful questions about the development process, business operations, partnership management, and the entrepreneurial mindset. Their curiosity and enthusiasm were evident, particularly in their eagerness to understand the technical and creative aspects of entrepreneurship in the digital age.

A Foundation for Future Success

This initiative aimed to inspire and educate students, providing valuable insights into the construction industry and the entrepreneurial journey. By experiencing our projects firsthand, they gained:

At TDW, we are committed to building more than just structures; we are dedicated to developing the next generation of entrepreneurs. As John C. Maxwell said, "True success comes only when every generation continues to develop the next generation." By investing in these young minds, we are shaping their futures and contributing to the growth of our industry. We are grateful for the trust St. George's College has placed in us and look forward to continued collaboration with schools across Zimbabwe. Together, we can empower future leaders and build a brighter future.
